Aciclovir (Hexavir) 50mg/g (5% w/w) Cream 10 grams is an antiviral medication used for the topical treatment of skin infections caused by the Herpes simplex virus (HSV). This includes:

  • Cold sores (herpes labialis): Blisters that typically appear on the face or lips.
  • Genital herpes: Sores that form around the genitals and rectum.

How it works:

Aciclovir works by stopping the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body. It does not cure herpes or prevent future outbreaks, but it helps to:

  • Relieve pain and discomfort associated with the sores.
  • Speed up the healing process of the blisters.
  • Reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.
  • Prevent the virus from spreading to unaffected skin areas.

Application:

The cream is for external use only and should be applied to the affected areas as soon as the first signs of infection appear (e.g., tingling, itching, redness, or pain, before blisters fully form).

  • Typically applied 5 times a day (approximately every 4 hours, avoiding application during sleep) for 5 to 10 days, or as directed by a doctor.
  • Hands should be washed thoroughly before and after application to prevent spreading the infection.
  • A thin layer of cream should be applied to cover the affected area and the skin immediately surrounding it.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, inside the mouth or nose, or other mucous membranes, as it can cause irritation.

Side Effects:

Common side effects are usually mild and temporary, and may include:

  • Burning or stinging sensation at the application site (usually goes away quickly).
  • Itching.
  • Mild drying or flaking of the skin.
  • Redness of the skin.

More serious side effects are rare but can occur, such as allergic reactions (hives, rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing). If these occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Important Note:

Aciclovir cream is most effective when used at the very beginning of an outbreak. It will not prevent the transmission of the herpes virus to other people. If symptoms do not improve after the recommended course of treatment, or if they worsen, a doctor should be consulted.
